Education:NYSC Members urged to be Hardworking

The National Youth Service Corps has urged corps members currently mobilised for the one year mandatory service to be tolerant, hardworking and contribute to the development of the country.

The Coordinator of the NYSC in Osun State, Mr. Emmanuel Attah, said this in Ede on Monday at the swearing in of the 2018 Batch A corps members deployed in Osun State.

Stressing that service to their fatherland demanded humility and dedication, he urged the youths to endure the physical and psychological training which they would be exposed to on camp.

He said, “As a highly skilled segment of the youthful population of our country from different geographical, social and religious backgrounds, your ability to tolerate and live with one another peacefully will always remain a reliable barometer to measure the pressure of our national cohesion. You must not let our nation down.”

He warned that the scheme would not tolerate social vices from the corps members while urging them to strive to contribute their own quotas to make their communities and the nation in general better.

The Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, said the NYSC had been contributing in no small measure to the development and the unity of Nigeria.

He said, “Over the years, these founding objectives have been vigorously and successfully implemented. Thousands of youths mobilised under the scheme have contributed immensely to the growth and development of our country.

“Besides promoting national  unity and integration, the NYSC scheme has also become a viable tool for the implementation of critical national development programmes.

“I urge you to maintain discipline and decorum in the camp and participate vigorously in all the activities of the orientation programe and throughout your service year.

“You should be the best the country will be proud of and see yourselves as agents of our change mantra.  You must shun corruption and other vices and instead embrace integrity and humility.  To be great leaders tomorrow, you must lay a solid foundation today.”

The Osun State Commissioner for Empowerment and Youth Engagement, Mrs. Folake Adegboyega, called on the corps members to pay attention to the  skill acquisition  trainings which they would be exposed to during the orientation Programme.

He said this would enable them to be self reliant  especially before getting employment after their service year.

HEALTH:GINGER THE MYSTIC ROOT PLANTS

YAKUBU JOAN AND ADOGA DANIELLA

Ginger is among the healthiest (and most delicious) spices on the planet. Ginger is a flowering plant that originated from China. It is loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds that have powerful benefits for your body and brain.
Here are some health benefits of ginger that are supported by scientific research
Ginger Contains Gingerol, a Substance With Powerful Medicinal Properties.
It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, and is closely related to turmeric, cardomon and galangal. The rhizome (underground part of the stem) is the part commonly used as a spice. It is often called ginger root, or simply ginger. Ginger has a very long history of use in various forms of traditional/alternative medicine. It has been used to help digestion, reduce nausea and help fight the flu and common cold, to name a few. Ginger can be used fresh, dried, powdered, or as an oil or juice, and is sometimes added to processed foods and cosmetics. It is a very common ingredient in recipes. The unique fragrance and flavor of ginger come from its natural oils, the most important of which is gingerly.  Ginger is the main bioactive compound in ginger, responsible for much of its medicinal properties. It has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Ginger Can Treat Many Forms of Nausea, Especially Morning Sickness.
Ginger appears to be highly effective against nausea. For example, it has a long history of use as a sea sickness remedy, and there is some evidence that it may be as effective as prescription medication. Ginger may also relieve nausea and vomiting after surgery, and in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. But it may be the most effective when it comes to pregnancy-related nausea, such as morning sickness. According to a review of 12 studies that included a total of 1,278 pregnant women, 1.1-1.5 grams of ginger can significantly reduce symptoms of nausea. However, ginger had no effect on vomiting episodes in this study. Although ginger is considered safe, talk to your doctor before taking large amounts if you are pregnant. Some believe that large amounts can raise the risk of miscarriage, but there are currently no studies to support this.
Ginger reduces Muscle Pain and Soreness.
It has been shown to be effective against exercise-induced muscle pain. In one study, consuming 2 grams of ginger per day, for 11 days, significantly reduced muscle pain in people performing elbow exercises. Ginger does not have an immediate impact, but may be effective at reducing the day-to-day progression of muscle pain. These effects are believed to be mediated by the anti-inflammatory properties.
Ginger drastically Lower Blood Sugars and Improve Heart Disease Risk Factors.
This area of research is relatively new, but ginger may have powerful anti-diabetic properties. In a recent 2015 study of 41 participants with type 2 diabetes, 2 grams of ginger powder per day lowered fasting blood sugar by 12%. It also dramatically improved HbA1c (a marker for long-term blood sugar levels), leading to a 10% reduction over a period of 12 weeks. There was also a 28% reduction in the ApoB/ApoA-I ratio, and a 23% reduction in markers for oxidized lipoproteins. These are both major risk factors for heart disease.
Ginger Can Help Treat Chronic Indigestion.
Chronic indigestion (dyspepsia) is characterized by recurrent pain and discomfort in the upper part of the stomach. It is believed that delayed emptying of the stomach is a major driver of indigestion. Interestingly, ginger has been shown to speed up emptying of the stomach in people with this condition. After eating soup, ginger reduced the time it took for the stomach to empty from 16 to 12 minutes. In a study of 24 healthy individuals, 1.2 grams of ginger powder before a meal accelerated emptying of the stomach by 50%.
Ginger Powder May Significantly Reduce Menstrual Pain.
Menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) refers to pain felt during a woman's menstrual cycle. One of the traditional uses of ginger is for pain relief, including menstrual pain. In one study, 150 women were instructed to take 1 gram of ginger powder per day, for the first 3 days of the menstrual period. Ginger managed to reduce pain as effectively as the drugs mefenamic acid and ibuprofen.
Ginger also Lower Cholesterol Levels.
High levels of LDL lipoproteins (the "bad" cholesterol) are linked to an increased risk of heart disease. The foods you eat can have a strong influence on LDL levels. In a 45-day study of 85 individuals with high cholesterol, 3 grams of ginger powder caused significant reductions in most cholesterol markers (15). This is supported by a study in hypothyroid rats, where ginger extract lowered LDL cholesterol to a similar extent as the cholesterol-lowering drug atorvastatin. Both studies also showed reductions in total cholesterol and blood triglycerides.
Ginger Contains a Substance That May Help Prevent Cancer
Cancer is a very serious disease that is characterized by uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Ginger extract has been studied as an alternative treatment for several forms of cancer. The anti-cancer properties are attributed to 6-gingerol, a substance that is found in large amounts in raw ginger. In a study of 30 individuals, 2 grams of ginger extract per day significantly reduced pro-inflammatory signaling molecules in the colon. However, a follow-up study in individuals at a high risk of colon cancer did not confirm these findings. There is some, albeit limited, evidence that ginger may be effective against pancreatic cancer, breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
Ginger May Improve Brain Function and Protect Against Alzheimer's Disease.
Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation can accelerate the aging process. They are believed to be among the key drivers of Alzheimer's disease and age-related cognitive decline. Some studies in animals suggest that the antioxidants and bioactive compounds in ginger can inhibit inflammatory responses that occur in the brain. There is also some evidence that ginger can enhance brain function directly. In study of 60 middle-aged women, ginger extract was shown to improve reaction time and working memory. There are also numerous studies in animals showing that ginger can protect against age-related decline in brain function.
The Active Ingredient in Ginger Can Help Fight Infections
Gingerol, the bioactive substance in fresh ginger, can help lower the risk of infections. In fact, ginger extract can inhibit the growth of many different types of bacteria. It is very effective against the oral bacteria linked to inflammatory diseases in the gums, such as gingivitis and periodontitis. Fresh ginger may also be effective against the RSV virus, a common cause of respiratory infections.
So, get some ginger  roots in the house and start making use of them. Live healthy.

Sport: Salah, Sane pick up PFA awards

Author: Damilola Olaleye

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has won the PFA Player of the Year award, edging out Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.
The pair were the only realistic contenders for the accolade but it it Salah who has been rewarded for a stellar first campaign at Anfield, with 31 goals and nine assists coming from his 33 outings in the Premier League.

After the announcement, Salah said: "It's an honour and especially as it's voted by the players. I am happy and proud. I didn't have my chance at Chelsea. It was clear I would return and show everyone my football. I think I left and came back a different person, man and player."

Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane was named in third position and the England international also missed out in the race for the PFA Young Player of the Year award, which went to Man City's Leroy Sane.

The 22-year-old has contributed nine goals and 12 assists from his 28 league outings for City during the current campaign.

International Relation:Social Media Blackout In Chad

Author: SHOGBADE PRAISE

Due to the political tension ongoing in Chad, the government has blocked social media and messaging platforms in the country.

Internet Without Borders (IWB) reported that users of platforms like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Viber started reporting a shutdown from as early as March 28. The internet censorship watchdog, the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI), also confirmed network measurement data showed the BBC’s news website was blocked.

Speaking on the blackout, Julie Owono, the executive director of IWB said,  “Unfortunately, the Chadian regime is used to shutting down telecommunications, [the] internet in particular, whenever there are demonstrations or public expression of people’s discontent towards the government.”

Owono also  said the government might have instituted the blackout after videos of clashes within president Deby’s own Zaghawa clan were shared on WhatsApp. Authorities also didn’t respond to IWB’s request on why they blocked the BBC’s online site.

Only recently, advocacy groups submitted a report to the UN Human Rights Council detailing evidence of breaching freedom of expression, access to information, and the right to privacy. The violations included the January internet blackout ahead of demonstrations organized by civil society organizations, besides the eight-month social media cutoff following controversial elections in 2016. IWB estimates all these blackouts combined cost the Chadian economy €18 million ($22.1 million).

Social media or internet censorship by African governments is becoming a worrisome and growing trend in Africa. Just last year about nine African countries shut down these platforms ahead of elections, national exams and in the midst of political tensions.

Arts&Culture: National Art Theatre GM, Dr. Stella Oyedepo calls for cooperation to revive the Industry

Author: Pauline Adegbe

Newly appointed General Manager of the National Art Theatre in Lagos, Stella Oyedepo, has appealed for all hands to be on deck to transform the art and culture industry, stating that the challenges expected to greet her upon her resumption at the office can only be levelled with cooperation from different quarters.

Dr. Oyedepo who described her appointment by the federal government as a ‘a pleasant surprise’ stressed that taking over the office was like ‘water to fish’ having served as the Executive Director and Artistic Director of the Kwara State Arts Council for 17 years, but to record commendable achievements, determination and hard work are necessary.

She said, “Every assignment has its challenges. When I come on the stream; I’ve not actually arrived on stream, we will put heads together and see what we can do to turn the place around. With cooperation from different quarters, determination, hard work and God on our side, we will record commendable achievements. I will also say that with God, all things are possible. I’m not being religious but everybody draws his strength from somebody and I do draw my strength from God.

“So, with God and determination, we shall succeed. The mountains will be levelled. We will work hard to resolve all issues and conflicts. They are human issues, not supernatural or superhuman issues so we will evolve means of tackling them effectively.” She was quoted by tribuneonlineng.com

The 64-year-old writer is known for her 1988 play, ‘The Greatest Gift’ and the 2001 play, ‘Brain Has No Gender’, which was written for the Kwara State Ministry of Education for Women-in-Science Programme; most of her work are centered on marriage, corruption, politics, and family life.
Oyedepo, who is the first female to occupy the position previously held by Jimmy Atte, Professor Femi Osofisan, and Professor Ahmed Yerima, played down the historic appointment, arguing that result is much more important than the gender leading the institution, “I wasn’t expecting it. It came as a very pleasant surprise and I attribute it to God, giving me another opportunity to serve, to do what I know how to do best. It doesn’t matter whether male or female, it’s the delivery that matters”. Oyedepo warned.

With over 30 books under her belt, and her experience as a playwright and astute culture administrator, the author is confidence that the theatre industry will experience positive growth and improvement, as well as reconcile aggrieved parties under her management, “There will be improvement, positive growth because we will look at things holistically to ascertain what’s hampering progress and proffer solutions. We will resolve all grievances and operate in a very peaceful, loving atmosphere so that we all can pull in the same direction and grow the theatre”. Oyedepo said
She also addressed the achievement of FESTAC ’77, with a promise to bring back the glory days by looking into infrastructure and programming that will be a resemblance of the World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture, “The lost glory must be brought back. It was really a glorious place in those days; where we showcased FESTAC ’77. It was a glorious place and the lost glory must be brought back.  We will look at infrastructure, programming and other things that will help us restore the lost glory. It’s the cultural showpiece of this nation, so nothing will be allowed to tarnish its glory”. Oyedepo concluded

OPINION: NIGERIAN YOUTHS ARE NOT LAZY PRESIDENT BUHARI

Author: Olachi Vanessa Onyenwe
The president of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari on the 18th of April went for a business forum at the ongoing CHOGM and made a fallacious statement about Nigerian youths being lazy.
He further talked about our population estimated at a number of 180 million people, in which he claimed 60 percent of the people are above 30 and uneducated.
First of all, that is not a sentence a president of a country should make but it is not fascinating to me as it runs in the veins of Mr president to always make Nigerian look bad. I could remember vividly well on the 15 the of February, 2015 in an interview with the telegraph London, he said:
" Some Nigerians claim that life is too difficult back home, but they have also made it difficult for Europeans and Americans to accept them because of the number of Nigerians in prison all over the world accused of drug and human trafficking".
The youths of our country are the strongest hustlers I know, I call them" hustlers" because amidst all the struggles, they still strive to be better. The president sits there and talk about laziness, when he has not contributed to the progress of the country.it was the so called lazy youths that came together sometimes ago to create Bollywood without government support, we have doctors, lawyers, bankers, engineers and other respected profession all around the world same from this country, Nigeria.
Buhari talks about laziness when almost a range of 10 million jobs has been lost since his tenure began. To me, the word is vice versa, he is the lazy one here, how can a president of a country spend 103 days in a  London clinic on the verge of being sick and he has the effrontery to call Nigerian youths lazy.
Nigerians work day in, day out to make a living, despite the number of educated but jobless people in the country. There are over 3 million Nigerian  youths hawking various commodity under the scorching sun of our blessed country, yet our own president who hasn't done a meaningful thing since his tenure tagged them as "lazy".

In conclusion, the word "lazy" should not be tagged to any Nigerian youths as they are the pillar of our country.

Five foods dangerous to your body system

Author: Boluwatife Ezekiel Olaleye

The confusions remain among humans as to which foods are healthy, and which are not for our well-being. However, in a bid to clear the air and delete any form of confusion caused by ignorance which also will ultimately save lives, here is a list of five foods that are generally very unhealthy.

If you want to lose weight and avoid chronic disease, then you shouldn't eat much of these foods but in majority of cases, the best choice is to avoid them completely.

In this article, healthy alternatives are mentioned whenever possible.

1. Most Pizzas

Pizza is one of the world's most popular junk foods but it is not surprising, given that it tastes awesome and is incredibly convenient to eat.The problem however, is that, most commercially prepared pizzas are made with seriously unhealthy ingredients.

The dough is made from highly refined wheat flour, and the meats on them are usually processed. Pizza is also extremely high in calories.

Alternatives: Some pizza places use healthier ingredients. Homemade pizzas can also be very healthy, as long as you choose wholesome ingredients.

2. Sugary Drinks

Added sugar is the single worst ingredient in the modern diet. However, some sources of sugar are worse than others, and sugary drinks are the absolute worst.

When people take in sugar calories, the brain doesn't "register" them as food. For this reason, people don't automatically compensate by eating less of other foods instead, and end up drastically increasing their total calorie intake (1, 2, 3).

Sugar, when consumed in large amounts, can drive insulin resistance in the body and is strongly linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It is also associated with various serious diseases, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease (4, 5, 6).

Sugary drinks are also the most fattening aspect of the modern diet, and drinking them in large amounts can drive fat gain and obesity (7, 8, 9).

Alternatives: Drink water, soda water, coffee or tea instead. Adding a slice of lemon to water or soda water can add some taste if you don't like it plain.

3. White Bread

Bread is generally made from wheat, which contains the protein gluten.

For this reason, all wheat-based breads are a bad idea for people who have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

However, most commercial breads are unhealthy, even for people who do tolerate gluten.

This is because the great majority of them are made from refined wheat, which is low in essential nutrients (empty calories) and leads to rapid spikes in blood sugar (10).

Alternatives: For people who can tolerate gluten, ezekiel bread is an excellent choice. Whole grain bread is also definitely better (or "less bad") than white bread.

If you have problems with gluten or carbs, then here are 15 recipes for breads that are both gluten-free and low in carbs.

4. Most Fruit Juices

Fruit juice is often assumed to be healthy, but this is a mistake.

Many fruit juices are actually little more than fruit-flavored sugar water.

It is true that the juice contains some antioxidants and vitamin C, but this must be weighed against the large amount of liquid sugar.

In fact, fruit juice contains just as much sugar as a sugary drink like Coke or Pepsi, and sometimes even more (11).

Alternatives: There are some fruit juices that have been shown to have health benefits despite the sugar content, such as pomegrenate juice and blueberry juice.

However, these should be considered as supplements, not something you drink every day to quench thirst. Drink water instead.

5. Industrial Vegetable Oils

In the last 100 years or so, people have increased their consumption of added fats.

However, this is entirely explained by a drastic increase in the consumption of refined vegetable oils, such as soybean oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil and canola oil.

These oils are very high in omega-6 fatty acids, which humans never consumed in such large amounts before.

There are many serious concerns with these oils. They are highly sensitive to oxidation and cause increased oxidative stress in the body. They have also been linked to increased risk of cancer (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19).

Alternatives: Use healthier fats like coconut oil, butter, extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil instead.

Author: Hardeygbolar Airwatohmy

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, has ordered judges to resume at 9 a.m. and close 4 p.m. daily in all courts. Mr. Onnoghen said this at a function on Tuesday at the presidential villa, Abuja. The event was organized by the Itse Sagay-led Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption.

Mr Onnoghen aimed at fighting corruption and ensuring speedy and transparent delivery of justice in the Nigerian judicial system.

Backlog of cases, delayed proceedings and corruption allegations against officers are some of the stains the institution has been battling to remove, he said.

In the recent past, the judiciary has been accused of
corruption along with the allegation that when complaints of corrupt practices and unprofessional conducts are brought before the National Judicial Council (NJC), the Council shields or delays investigating the allegations so levied against judicial officers, he said.

The president of the court of appeal, Zainab Bulkachuwa, read the reform address which is embedded with different directives to improve the judicial system.

The reforms I have introduced cover a wide range of issues; from establishing new modalities for appointment of judicial officers, to tightening judicial discipline regulations and fashioning out a speedy way to clear backlog of cases, among others, the chief justice said.

Education: Obafemi Awolowo University Professor Suspended For Demanding Sex For Mark

                                  Prof. Richard Akindele

Author: Adetokunbo Omolara

The authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has reveal the name of the student who was  involved in the sex-for-marks scandal, that has sorely questioned the morality of university dons, in the training of young Nigerians.

According to Vanguard, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, the Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Monica Osetobe Osagie was studying for a Masters in Business Administration. He also announced the suspension of Prof. Richard Akindele, the don involved in the salacious scandal, following the submission of the interim report of the committee set up to investigate the allegation of sexual harassment revealed in audio recording.

The voice record has it that not only Miss Monica Osagie was involved in the scandal but other female students.

The Vice Chancellor said that though the investigative committee invited both Akindele and Osagie, only Akindele appeared before the committee.

“The report indicated that many other witnesses appeared before the committee and gave useful evidence. The university is making efforts to ensure that Miss Osagie appears before the investigative committee so that it can hear her side of the case and promptly submit its final report,’’ he said.

Explaining why the lecturer was yet to be sacked, the Vice Chancellor said that the provisions of the relevant statute of the university must be followed.

“Under the provisions of the relevant statute of the university, an academic staff can only be dismissed from service or have his or her appointment terminated only when the matter on which consideration is being given has been investigated by a Joint Council and Senate Committee; also the staff has appeared before the committee with his or her counsel, if so desired.

This procedure is the minimum requirement of the law and regulations of the university. “It should therefore be noted that the suspension of Professor Richard I. Akindele is on the basis of the findings of the Investigative Committee that he is prima facie liable.

This decision will abide, pending the final determination of the case by the council of the University”.

The vice chancellor said that the university would continue to do everything legally and morally acceptable in pursuance of its avowed commitment to zero tolerance for sexual harassment, intimidation and, or coercion.

Politics:Osinbajo Challenge Youths Of Nigeria

Author: BALEKAN OLABISI

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo  challenge Nigerian youths to brace up for assuming political leadership of the country in the years ahead. According to him, Nigerian youths must be ready for the political offices they intend to occupy, pointing out that leadership positions are not automatic. He gave the charge when he received a delegation of Not-Too-Young-To-Run Movement, which visited him in Abuja.

“It is true that young people are participating in every sphere of the economy and they are doing well, but they ended up there through one process of training or the other,” the Vice President said.

“I think that whatever age a person chooses to run should not matter; what should matter is the preparedness of the person because elective positions require some skills.

He stressed the need for Nigerian youths to have that kind of experience, adding that Nigeria did not need people who will just muzzle their way into positions. He further said that issues of governance needed to be planned deliberately, adding that women's participation in politics and issues related to the girl-child need to be taken seriously and addressed. According to him, the women that should normally be participating in politics do not have the know-how.

Osinbajo urged youths to challenge themselves with the big issues bedeviling the nation, pointing out the problem of corruption.

The police early on Thursday said the mace had been recovered from the street of Abuja

He said the act is treasonable and amounts to an attempted coup d'état.

“The armed invasion of the senate chambers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria stands condemned. Its treasonable and nothing but an attempted coup d'état.

Fashion:Latest Fashion Style For Ladies

Author: Ajayi Oluwabukunmi

Palazzo pants ( British English : palazzo trousers, Indian English : pantada) are long women's trousers cut with a loose, extremely wide leg that flares out from the waist.

Palazzo trousers are popular as a summer season style, as they are loose and tend to be flattering in light, flowing fabrics that are breathable in hot weather. Silk crepe/crape , jersey  and other natural fibre textiles are popular fabrics for this design. Palazzo trousers are less frequently seen during the winter months, but they may be found in wool or heavy synthetic fabrics as well.

  History of palazzo

Palazzo pants for women first became a popular trend in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The style was reminiscent of the wide-legged cuffed trousers worn by some women fond of avant-garde fashions in the 1930s and 1940s, particularly actresses such as Katharine Hepburn , Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich.  During the 1960s, some upscale restaurants resisted modern fashion trends by refusing to admit women wearing trousers, which were considered inappropriate by some proprietors.

This posed a problem for women who did not want to wear the skirt styles that were then in fashion. Some women opted to circumvent restaurant bans on women in pants by wearing palazzo trousers or
culottes as evening wear.

Palazzo pants flare out evenly from the waist to the ankle, and are therefore different from bellbottoms , which are snug until they flare out from the knee. Palazzo pants are also not to be confused with Gaucho trousers, which only extend down to mid-calf length. Harem pants are yet another loose style, but they have a snug cuff around the ankles.

Present day

Palazzo pants went out of fashion in the start of the 21st century but is currently becoming a new fashion trend.

How to rock palazzo

 1. Wear a lace shirt with your palazzo pants for a pretty, feminine look.

 2. Do some light layering with a denim vest over a tank top.

3. Or just pair them with a white tee and a statement necklace to keep things really simple.

 4. You wouldn’t except something as tough and solid as a leather jacket to go so well with something as flowey as these pants, but I love it!

 5. Add a blazer and heels or wedges for a more professional look.

 6. Going on vacation? Wear a pair of light and airy palazzo pants as a cover-up that works after the beach too.

 7. Cinch in your waist with a chic belt.
